{"id":3215,"date":"2025-02-10T18:04:08","date_gmt":"2025-02-10T15:04:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/trimbox.com.tr\/yurtlarda-parafudr-kullanimi\/"},"modified":"2025-12-25T15:50:03","modified_gmt":"2025-12-25T12:50:03","slug":"use-of-surge-arresters-in-dormitories","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/trimbox.com.tr\/en\/use-of-surge-arresters-in-dormitories\/","title":{"rendered":"USE OF SURGE ARRESTERS IN DORMITORIES"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>USE OF SURGE ARRESTERS IN DORMITORIES<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Following the <strong>electrical fire<\/strong> in the <strong>Alada\u011f<\/strong> district of Adana, which resulted in the tragedy of <strong>eleven<\/strong> students\u2014leaving deep wounds in the public conscience and raising the question &#8220;Could precautions have been taken?&#8221;\u2014<strong>twelve<\/strong> lives were tragically lost, and those responsible were sentenced to <strong>eight to twelve years<\/strong> of <strong>imprisonment<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>So, who were the responsible parties? Why were precautions not taken?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to the <strong>Regulation on the Preparation of Interior Installation Projects<\/strong>, which came into force after being published in the Official Gazette No. <strong>25305<\/strong> on <strong>December 3, 2003<\/strong>, the selection of <strong>surge arresters (SPD)<\/strong>, pulse protection devices, and other <strong>surge suppressors<\/strong> is mandatory under the heading of protection systems.<\/p>\n<p>This means the legally <strong>responsible parties<\/strong> were the <strong>project engineers<\/strong>, the <strong>contractor<\/strong>, and the <strong>dormitory manager<\/strong>, who also lost his daughter in the incident. The dormitory manager and the contractor might not even have been aware of the application since it wasn&#8217;t in the project; however, they are legally <strong>jointly and severally liable.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Surge arresters<\/strong> and pulse protection devices are protection products responsible for <strong>discharging<\/strong> the excess load between the ground and clouds, especially during lightning. <strong>Surge suppressors<\/strong>, on the other hand, are <strong>protection<\/strong> products tasked with <strong>dampening<\/strong> any overvoltage formation, including lightning.<\/p>\n<p>Since it is not possible to prevent overvoltage in systems where only standard <strong>surge arresters<\/strong> and pulse protection devices are used, a surge <strong>suppressor<\/strong> will be required. However, if a <strong>new generation surge arrester<\/strong>\u2014which simultaneously performs the duties of surge suppressors, surge arresters, and pulse protection devices\u2014is used in the system, there will be <strong>no need<\/strong> for <strong>separate<\/strong> surge arresters, pulse protectors, or surge suppressors.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, looking at the incident in <strong>Alada\u011f<\/strong>, after the meter replacement was performed, most likely due to a <strong>faulty<\/strong> or <strong>loose neutral<\/strong> terminal of the meter, a <strong>neutral failure<\/strong> or loosening occurred. Under <strong>unbalanced loads<\/strong>, the <strong>phase-to-neutral<\/strong> voltage, which should be <strong>220V<\/strong>, rose to <strong>380V<\/strong> levels, burning the systems and causing the <strong>fire<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In such a situation, <strong>surge arresters<\/strong> and pulse protection devices, along with products like residual current devices (RCD), fire protection relays, and fuses, <strong>have nothing they can do.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>New Generation Surge Arresters<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The products that can prevent damage in the event of a <strong>neutral failure<\/strong> are surge suppressors and <strong>new generation surge arresters<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In case of a <strong>neutral failure<\/strong>, the excess voltage that occurs under unbalanced loads will also rise between neutral and ground.
