SURGE ARRESTER WORKING PRINCIPLE
The surge arrester is a product which is insulated up to a predetermined voltage value and which is manufactured to discharge overload to the ground by passing through the determined voltage value. The surge arresters are produced in three main titles,
- High voltage surge arresters
- Medium voltage surge arresters
- Low voltage surge arresters
High voltage surge arresters:
It is a system that prevents the lightning effects of the 154kV-380kV switchboards on the transmission lines in the transmission line within the line isolation. Since high-voltage surge arresters operate at very high voltages, they are able to protect the systems by preventing overcurrents, in the absence of voltage limiting features.
Medium voltage surge arresters:
High voltage surge arrays used at 34,5kV voltages that go to the distribution lines are similar systems except voltage range of operation.
Low voltage surge arresters:
They are protection products manufactured to prevent damage to the end user in the city network after the transformer. Low voltage surge arresters do not limit the voltage just like high voltage and medium voltage surge arresters, but this time the situation is slightly different. Because the extreme tensions in the system can damage the system in the last user. Low voltage surge arresters are divided into three classes;
- B class surge arrester
- C class surge arrester
- D class surge arrester
B class surge arrester
At the outermost point of construction, using the pre-counter, this is the highest accuracy, the highest instantaneous overcurrent transmission capacity. If the tension is less than 2.5 kV, (10/350us) can discharge the 50kA current once without problems.
C class surge arrester
By mounting after the counter of the structure, by blocking the sudden overcurrents that class B can not pass through the system with more accurate protection, it provides tthe flow to the ground. If the tension is less than 1.5 kV, (8 / 20us) can discharge the 20kA current once without problems.
D class surge arrester
By selecting the electronic product to be protected as a target, it is preferred for more sensitive protection than class B and C surge arresters. If the tension is less than 1kV, (8 / 20us) can discharge the 6kA current once without problems.
